Come hungry and curious as you explore the alternative heart of Oslo through its flavours and stories. Starting at the historic Mathallen food hall, your guide leads you through the buzzing streets of Grünerløkka, where industry once ruled and culture now thrives. You follow the Akerselva river past colourful street art and local landmarks, and learn how this former working-class district became a hotspot for creativity, food and culture. It is not your average food tour: it is a bite-sized journey through Norway’s past and present, served with heart, with authentic tastes and local insights at every stop. Expect about 2 km of easy walking and enough food to skip lunch.

We open inside Oslo’s beloved food hall with a generous Nordic platter: minke whale, reindeer and moose, brunost, flatbread and lingonberries. A first deep dive into Norwegian flavours, right where the locals shop.

A rich Wild Game Stew of reindeer, moose and venison in a creamy sauce, with mashed potatoes and berries. Traditional Norwegian comfort food at its very best.

At one of the best bars in town: a Norwegian craft beer or local soft drink, plus a warm salmon and lefse wrap with cream cheese, a classic Norwegian combination beloved across the country.

A choice between hot chocolate or iced cocoa near the Freia Chocolate Factory, the home of Norway’s favourite chocolate since the 19th century. Sweet, warming, and very Norwegian.

The classic Norwegian treat, done right: a warm heart-shaped waffle topped with brunost, rømme and raspberry jam. Crispy at the edges, soft in the middle, impossible to eat without smiling.

Between tastings, we follow the Akerselva river past waterfalls and lush green paths, where nature meets colourful street art. Hear how a working-class district of old mills became Oslo’s creative heartbeat, and why the whole city is a little jealous of Grünerløkka.
Seven tastings served along the way, enough to skip lunch. The exact menu follows the seasons, but this is what a typical tour looks like.
We meet at the main entrance of Mathallen food hall (Vulkan 5, 0178 Oslo, Norway), the one with the 1908 sign above it, next to the Dansens Hus entrance and by Vulkan Fisk. The tour loops back and ends at Mathallen again. It is a few minutes on foot from the Grunerlokka tram stops, right by the Akerselva river.

Call or text us at +47 984 10 156 and we will help you catch the group at the first stop. If you know in advance that you will be late, email info@osloway.no and we will do our best to hold the start.
Not at all. Solo travellers are some of our favourite guests, and the small-group format makes conversation easy. We run the tour with a minimum of two paying guests, so if a date somehow cannot go ahead, you get your choice of a free rebooking or a full refund.
Advance booking is safest: groups are capped at 15 and peak summer weekends often fill up days ahead. Same-day bookings are fine whenever the calendar shows a spot. Booking and cancellations are all handled on this website, with no booking fee.
Dress for the Oslo weather of the day, in shoes you can walk 2 km in. Everything edible is included, so no cash or tickets are needed, just your phone for the confirmation email and any photos you want to take.
Email info@osloway.no when you book and we will be straight with you about what we can adapt. The menu leans Nordic: fish and shellfish, whale, reindeer and moose, dairy and brunost. We can often steer you to safe stops, but we cannot promise a full alternative menu for every diet.
Yes. Mathallen and the main tasting venues have restrooms, and your guide builds in stops along the way, so nobody is marching two hours straight. The pace is a stroll, not a march, with most walking on flat ground.
Absolutely. Mathallen is a working food hall and most of our stops are real venues, so you are welcome to order more on your own tab if something wins you over. Many guests do.
No minimum age, and anyone under 18 simply gets alcohol-free alternatives to the two tastings that include alcohol. Strollers are easy on the flat route; the storytelling suits curious older kids best.
The route follows pavements and park paths that are mostly flat. The tasting venues vary: some are fully accessible, others have steps or tight interiors. Contact us before booking and we will tell you honestly what to expect.
Yes, free of charge up to 24 hours before the tour starts, by email or by replying to your confirmation. Later than that, or for no-shows, we cannot refund, since guides and food are ordered for you. If we ever have to cancel a tour for unsafe conditions, you get a full refund or a free reschedule.
A tip is never required, but it is genuinely welcomed. Guides are always happy when they get one, and a tip or a kind review at the end of a great tour means a lot to them.
Yes. OsloWay also runs an Oslo beer and culture walk, a Christmas traditions tour, a Viking-themed experience, and private versions of everything for groups and companies. OsloWay has run food experiences in Grunerlokka since 2019, starting from Mathallen with guides who actually live here. You get seven generous Norwegian tastings, street art and river history woven between them, and a group capped at 15. No booking fee, and free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
One of our guests filmed her whole experience on the tour. Watch it before you book.

This tour can also be booked as a private experience, even for larger groups. Same guides, same tastings, just your own party. Tell us your dates and group size and we will put it together.
