The experience

Christmas magic, the Norwegian way

Celebrate the season with a festive walking tour through central Oslo, blending holiday cheer with culture, history, and folklore. Your journey begins at the Opera House, one of Oslo’s most iconic landmarks, before continuing past the Cathedral, Parliament, the National Theatre, the majestic Royal Palace, and City Hall. Along the way, your guide shares how Norwegians celebrate — from the foods served on Christmas Eve to how Oslo dresses up for the season — and brings beloved folklore to life with stories of Julenissen (the Norwegian Santa Claus), mischievous trolls said to roam on Christmas Eve, and the tradition of the Christmas log. There’s even a cosy moment when your guide reads aloud a classic Norwegian Christmas fairy tale from a traditional storybook, before the walk concludes at Oslo’s enchanting Christmas Market.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the Christmas tour meet, and where does it end?

We meet at the main entrance of the Oslo Opera House and finish at the Christmas market (Jul i Vinterland) in the city centre. From there you can hop straight into festive shopping or gløgg round two.

When does the tour run, and when should I arrive?

Every day from 10 November to 30 December at 14:00. Please arrive about 10 minutes early; the tour is a two-hour walk and starts on time.

What if I am running late or cannot find the group?

Call or text us at +47 984 10 156 and we will guide you to the group on the route. If you know in advance, email info@osloway.no.

Is it cold? What should I wear?

It is Oslo in November and December, so yes: wrap up in proper winter clothes, a warm hat, mittens and shoes with grip. We walk at a cosy pace and pause for gløgg, but you should dress for the season, not for the sofa.

What does the price include, and are there extra fees?

Your guide and all the festive treats: non-alcoholic gløgg, smultringer (Norwegian Christmas doughnuts), kransekake (almond ring cake) and a small holiday gift. No booking fee, nothing extra at checkout. Between 1 October and 31 March tours get 20% off at checkout.

Can I cancel my booking?

Yes, free of charge up to 24 hours before the tour starts, by email or by replying to your confirmation. Later than that, or for no-shows, we cannot refund, since your guide and treats are booked for you. If weather ever turns genuinely unsafe, you get a full refund or a free reschedule.

The gløgg is non-alcoholic. Can I have the alcoholic version?

You can swap your cup for alcoholic gløgg at the market, yes, but you pay for it there yourself. Norwegian rules around serving alcohol are strict, so we cannot include or resell it; carry valid ID, as the legal drinking age is 18 and some venues only serve over 21.

Are children welcome?

Very much so. This is a family-friendly walk with folklore, fairy tales, doughnuts and cocoa-friendly fun, and nothing in the tour depends on alcohol. Winters in Oslo are magical and glistening, and children usually love every troll story.

I am travelling alone. Will I feel out of place?

Not at all. The tour is chatty and story-driven, and small groups warm up fast (in every sense). We run with a minimum of two paying guests; if a date cannot go ahead, you get a free rebooking or a full refund.

How big are the groups?

Maximum 12 guests, so you can hear every story from the opera roof down to the market. Groups of 13 or more can book the tour privately with flexible dates and times.

Should I tip my guide?

A tip is never required, but it is genuinely welcomed. Guides are always happy when they get one, and a tip or a kind review at the end of a great tour means a lot to them.

Do you run other tours?

Yes. OsloWay also runs the original Grunerlokka food and culture walk, an Oslo beer and culture walk, a Viking-themed experience, and private versions of everything for groups and companies. Book one of our tours and your next tour of your choice is 20% off when you book directly with us. Contact us at info@osloway.no to claim it.
